So many good ones 😊
Yes, and so many intimidating ones, I tried to pick more summer appropriate ones as I could.
There’s so many classics out there! I don’t really know anything about most of these books. Sounds like a good list though! I’m curious what you’ll think of the ones that you do end up reading.
I’ve read 2 maybe three of these, The Old Curiosity Shop I know I read, and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Have you read any Jules Verne before?
Are the Henry ones more Summer related? I keep meaning to read Shakespeare.
Also this reminded me of the time I read the Mysterious Island years ago which it’s a sequel to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and while I don’t remember it very well I do remember that after the group from the first book (this is sort of a spoiler, but it’s also kind of not mostly because I feel like you do know it’s probably bound to happen) ends up escaping/leaving and Captain Nemo has been like ‘Don’t tell anyone about me. That’s my one condition’ and then in the sequel there’s this group of guys stranded on an island and they’re trying to survive. (this one is a spoiler) Sometimes the group seems to get unexplained help and none of them can figure out what’s going on. Turns out it’s Captain Nemo and these guys as soon as they meet him are excited saying ‘you’re the Captain Nemo guy!’ and he’s like ‘those guys on my submarine told people about me didn’t they?’ and they’re essentially like ‘Yep, actually they wrote a book called 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea pretty much immediately after and it’s a best seller. Everybody is talking about you’ and at least for me it was the longest, most deadpan silence I’ve ever read in a classic book and I remember that I laughed a lot.
There are an insane number of classics out there. I’m already starting a new list!
Well, I had to stretch summer to mean NOT moody and fallish-wintery (like Macbeth).
I think Mom read Around the World in 80 Days to us, but I hardly remember anything. I’m going to have to read that sequel you mention, it sounds cool.
I can’t quite remember what I thought of the sequel. It wasn’t my favourite Jules Verne of the few that I’ve read anyways, It was kind of the usual British Guys stranded on an island and they try to survive and there’s probably a pig that gets ‘gloriously roasted’ in it somewhere. It seems like it was sort of the popular genre at the time. But again it’s been a long time so I honestly can’t remember. I think I liked everything with Captain Nemo in it though.
So many good books–I wish I could read GWTW and Brideshead Revisited again for the first time. Such incredible books even if GWTW is so very controversial.
I would be going in blind to Brideshead Revisited which I love doing, but I’m not looking forward to GWTW, I skimmed it in my teens or early twenties, everybody is so unlikeable, and I just couldn’t force myself to watch the movie, but it’s such a, I don’t know, significant book? Or so talked about?
A very nice list! I read Brideshead Revisited some years back and fell in love with it. I’m utterly curious to see what number we get.
Thanks, there are several on here that I’m interested to try . . . others I’m hoping won’t get picked.
